when i first heard antony hegarty’s voice in 2005’s i am a bird now, i was spellbound and couldn’t help agree with the many others who compared him to the great nina simone, whom he’s covered before. since 2005, antony’s also been busy sharing the stage with lou reed, dueting with bjork, and most recently, singing for hercules and love affair, which is responsible for one of my favorite albums of the year so far. in his latest ep, antony returns with the johnsons in yet another sensitive and arresting record, with the opening title track a contradiction of sorts, the piano keys treading lightly but firmly, his voice fragile but controlled. indeed, “another world” isn’t so much a yearning to leave for a new home as it is a longing to stay, and given the current state of things, that longing’s probably the toughest place to be at.
another world is now out on secretly canadian.
