today, okkervil river‘s the stand-ins – the anticipated sequel to last year’s the stage names – will be released. after a short prelude, the album launches straight into “lost coastlines” a stirring duet between will sheff and jonathan meiburg who had recently left the band to focus on his work with shearwater. both bands had grown to the point where it was just impossible for meiburg to have his feet in both, and the tensions and dilemmas of this situation play out in the song itself, as both actors tug at opposing ends of the rope, fighting not each other but the emptiness and directionlessness they’ve been left to wrestle with. lyrically, this has got to be one of the most poetically honest songs written in a while, and that’s a direction i don’t see okkervil river detracting very far from in the foreseeable future.
