#18 a hawk and a hacksaw and the hun hangar ensemble – romanian hora and bulgar

according to the cd liner notes, jeremy barnes of a hawk and a hacksawplays accordion with his hands; two bass drums, cymbals and a gong with his feet; goat bells and a cow bell with his right knee; and sleigh bells and a cymbal with his head” in this live rendition of a traditional eastern european tune. try listening out for all of that in this two part song, which comprises both a quiet dance movement and a frantic, rousing finale, and which is available on the self titled collaboration of a hawk and a hacksaw and the hun hangar ensemble, released on the leaf label in limited quantities. you have no idea how excited i was to have picked this up in london last year. at that time, i was of course familiar with barnes’ work with neutral milk hotel, and had just started listening much to his more recent work with the balkan-influenced beirut, so this was the perfect take-off from there. these guys are currently on a summer tour through the states and europe, so do catch them if you can.
