one of the music blogs i enjoy visiting is matt’s spitcake, which i can always count on for a great recommendation, and it was through his post two weeks ago on gregory and the hawk that i got started on this new signing on uk label fat cat. well regarded for releasing a diverse range of experimental music, the label has also been involved in the re-entrance of folk legend vashti bunyan, who’s been an inspiration to the likes of other fat cat artists like animal collective. gregory and the hawk fits perfectly in this direction, with the idyllic vocals of meredith godreau bearing the spritely glow of bunyan and the impish twist of joanna newsom. in “wild west”, godreau’s voice floats at just the perfect height above a simple folk intro that gives way all too quickly to an impending storm and the restless calm that follows.
